Read more about this new collaborative effort between ADL and NATO.

ADL launches Future Learning Experience Project
SCORM was built to support web-based delivery of learning content, based on initial design dating back to the late 1990s. While ADL continues to support SCORM and commits to supporting SCORM compatibility in new efforts, we have also begun new work to meet distributed learning needs beyond SCORM: the Future Learning Experience Project. ADL has been referring to the Future Learning Experiences project as FLEX. The resulting environment from the FLEX research and development will be referred to as Enabling Learning Experiences (ELE). Internally, the FLEX project will continue to be referred to as such; however, moving forward ELE will be the term used for the external community. Please visit the project Web site to learn more about learning experiences that involve non-traditional electronic content, distributed content, shared learning data, team-based learning and multi-modal delivery.

Multiple events and weekly updates to the project blog will keep you informed and engaged with our new endeavor. Recent posts on Working Together With AICC and Advancing the LETSI Run-Time Web Service API may be of particular interest to the ADL community at large.

Project Tin Can solicits your input
A few months ago, Rustici Software was granted an opportunity by ADL to conduct a key research project to explore a path forward for a modern communication framework that reaches beyond SCORM. "Project Tin Can" is the first effort launched in support of the Future Learning Experience Project and will feed directly into the development of next generation e-learning practices, design patterns and specifications.

To be successful, the project needs your input. Please read the “Project Tin Can" blog post and then visit the "Project Tin Can" Web site and vote on the ideas presented there - or contribute your own - to ensure that the focus is on solving problems people actually care about. If you use technologies (not just SCORM-based technologies) to train, lead, collaborate, educate, teach, develop, learn and know, send email to tincan@scorm.com if you want to talk about how you use different tools - and what tools are on your wish list.

ADL 3D Repository adds more objects
If you haven’t visited the ADL 3D Repository for a while, check it out. Many new 3D objects have been added, including furniture and other items for indoor scenarios. While there, read Damon Regan’s “Anniversary of the 3D Repository” blog post and invitation to his tutorial at GameTech 2011 on 23 March in Orlando. Please note: the ADL Registry area on ADLnet.gov has been expanded and renamed Discovery & Access to more accurately describe what we do in this area; it now encompasses the 3D Repository project as well as the ADL Registry.

Emerging Technologies' Mobile Learning Team featured in 10-4 newsletter
The January 2011 issue of 10-4, Team Orlando's online newsletter, included an article entitled "Live and Learn: All Things Mobile" about the status of the mobile learning boom worldwide. ADL's Judy Brown is quoted saying "Mobile learning is hot". Download the issue here (PDF, 1.26MB); the mobile learning article is on page 2.

Case study reports on reuse of Veterans Affairs courseware modules
The ADL Research and Evaluation team has published a new case study on the cost savings achieved through the reuse of over 50 courseware packages that were migrated from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to the Department of Defense Military Health Service’s (MHS) LMS. Topics include Traumatic Brain Injury, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Suicide Risk Prevention. Read more about this successful arrangement here.

New, on-demand video webinar series launched
Now you can learn about ADL-related topics whenever it best suits your schedule. We’ve replaced our former webinar series with new, on-demand videos. No more time-zone constraints or limited class sizes to worry about. Watch a video webinar whenever and wherever you want; pause, replay and review as much as you need to. We've divided the material into short, easy-to-manage parts, so you can view them separately when time permits, or watch all the parts sequentially. You set the pace.

Access to the video series is from our Learning Opportunities web page. Or go to the ADL Initiative channel on YouTube. Closed captions are provided.

Here’s our current video webinar line-up:
-      Introduction to SCORM (4-part series)
-      Creating Reusable Content in SCORM 2004 (5-part series)
-      Visual Design Principles for E-learning (8-part series)

Additional videos on a variety of topics are in the pipeline; watch for future announcements or subscribe to the ADL Initiative Channel on YouTube and be notified automatically.

Choosing an LMS white paper is valuable new resource

Templates for comparing features and requirements are included. Download the Choosing an LMS PDF file (1.0 MB) here; also check out the companion slide presentation.

Zipcast - changing the way the world conducts meetings
Have you ever wished you could jump into an online meeting from anywhere? Or wanted to start meetings instantly? Well, guess what, now you can.  No need to download software or wait five minutes for a meeting to start. Open your browser and with one click you’re in a Zipcast meeting.

Zipcast is the new meeting platform SlideShare that lets you conduct inexpensive, secure private meetings and limitless free public meetings from your web browser. Everyone gets a personalized meeting room - if you have a SlideShare login, you already have a meeting room at http://www.slideshare.net/USERNAME/meeting. Or you can get one for free here. You also get streaming video, audio and group chat for free.

As Rashmi explains here, Zipcast meetings are interactive and social and take place entirely within a browser window.  Unlike older online meeting systems, no clunky screen takeover is required - you can keep other browser tabs open. You can invite people by giving them the meeting room URL via IM, email, Facebook, or Twitter. For a public Zipcast, chats can be shared on Twitter or Facebook.

Every SlideShare user has free access to Zipcast for conducting public meetings. Pro users get additional functionality like (a) ad removal, (b) private, password-protected meetings accessible only to people invited by the host and (c) audio conferencing.

Ready to Zipcast? Go to your meeting room to get started.

Upcoming Zipcasts

A number of prominent SlideShare users have started Zipcasting as of February 16th. We'd love for you to drop by. Here's the schedule of upcoming Zipcasts.  Jump in!

#EDEN News - #ICT for Higher Education - HEXTLEARN final reports

Unknownname

HEXTLEARN Community Update

THE COMMUNITY LIVES ON, THE PROJECT ENDS

With over 570 members in the Web 2.0 Community, Higher Education professionals interested in ICT for HE institutions now have a real network for their own use.

The network mapped the use of ICT in HE Institutions by carrying out an extensive research of good practices, analysing the straightness of the different approaches in ICT/eLearning processes in the educational institutions. Using the good practice contributions, a pool of peer reviewers carried out face-to-face and virtual peer reviews based on collaboration among experts of the ICT approaches and applications.

As the HEXTLEARN project ended in 2010, the project partners decided to continue maintaining the community for the future. The final research results went online on the HEXTLEARN community: The Good Practice Collection, the Virtual Peer Review Report and the Living Toolkit are now fully accessible for free and the project team is giving the lead to the community members to collaborate, network and use this Toolkit for their benefit. The Community members may request a Virtual Peer Review process from now on based on the fully tested methodology.

THE GOOD PRACTICE REPORT

The report is summarizing the outcome of a long research work during the project based on a detailed research plan. Different techniques were used to collect possible Good practices of ICT use in the European Higher Educational arena. The cases were categorized in 9 territories. Upon agreed definition we selected (shortlisted) those where at least two criteria of excellence could be observed.

Based on the good practices, detailed data was gathered about the selected practices with different techniques, most commonly by updating or making interviews with the representatives of the institution. Finally more than 35 detailed cases were quantitatively analyzed by a common grid of 30 questions in 9 areas from management to communication. The analysis shows the most frequently cited common elements in respective areas that lead to good practice, as well as some territory specific outcomes where some aspects were cited only in one or two territory cases.

To read the research report, log in to the HEXTLEARN community and download the PDF file on the main page.

THE PEER REVIEW REPORT

The report is summarizing the outcome of a long and intensive exercise consisting of designing the approach, tools, embedding into the http://www.hextlearn.eu/ platform and final implementation and reporting of 9 peer review exercises in 8 EU countries carried out in the frame of the Hextlearn project.

The virtual peer reviews have been adapted to the needs of the HEIs involved and have also been present in the main project seminars and workshops via virtual exchanges and group discussions. The 9 Peer Reviews have been carried out in 2 steps.

The report shows the high potential that a web 2.0 platform has in gathering HEI representatives across Europe to exchange, learn and improve their ICT approaches for teaching and learning.

THE LIVING TOOLKIT SERVICE

The purpose of the LIVING TOOLKIT is:

  • to let you read and use the information we synthetised from the large number of good practice cases, interviews and peer reviews gathered from the Hextlearn community;
  • to encourage you to share the recommendations you think are useful for other ICT practicioners in Higher Education all around Europe;
  • to see a broad picture about ICT good practices all around Europe to position yourself;
  • to go further on the Hextlearn road in case our WikiMendations has got assuring indications to your ICT practice by using the tool: Sharing Practice.

To take a look, please visit the HEXTLEARN Community.

Webinar with William and Mary

On January 13 at 1 p.m. PST (9 p.m. UTC), Gene Roche and Mark Hofer from the College of William and Mary will be joining us to kick off the new year with a Private Label webinar. Sign up today.

Featured Wiki: The Daring Librarian

Gwyneth Jones started the Daring Librarian wiki in October of 2006.

1. Briefly describe your group, your wiki, and what you use it to do:

The Daring Librarian's Steam Powered Wiki in a Digitally Shifted World is a professional development technology wiki to support the teachers and admin of Murray Hill Middle School in Laurel, Maryland (and all educators who are interested in Web 2.0, animation, tech-tips, building a PLN, and other various professional development information) in a easy to use, graphically charged Steampunk format. Though we don't really want other schools to edit and add to our wiki - we're building it as a closed school community - our creations are Creative Commons, Attribution, Non-Commercial, and Share Alike so any educator is free to copy and paste whole or multiple pages, as long as they follow the Creative Commons license.

2. Besides the Edit button, which wiki feature is your favorite?

EMBEDDING widgets! I love me some widgets! From Gale/Cengage, World Book, SIRS, learning database widgets, Google doc forms, to Go!Animate and Xtranormal animations and videos, to the Sweet Search student resource box... embedding widgets on our pages brings them alive!

A Message from Carole

With only a few days left in 2010, I’ve been feeling a bit reflective — looking back on all the changes I’ve seen in 2010, and wondering what new things 2011 might bring.

Around here, 2010 was the year we turned 5. It was the year we gave away our 300,000th free K–12 wiki and the year we hit over 1 million visitors in a single day. It was also the year we upgraded our editor and, just this month, the year we introduced multiple authentication to our Private Label customers (that last one especially was very exciting around the office).

More personally, 2010 was the year that I joined the Wikispaces team. Since last winter, it’s been my happy responsibility to bring you all the latest Wikispaces news and to shine a light on just a few of your amazing, fantastic wikis both in this mailing and on our blog.

So what about 2011? Well, I expect that we’re going to keep building a better product, and you’ll keep building better wikis. And I look forward to telling you about all of it.

Happy New Year!

What will you do with your next wiki?

Good idea: Creating a wiki to keep an updated wish list for the holiday gifting season.

Bad idea: Creating a wiki to let your family and friends know how disappointed you were in your gifts.
